Elon Musk unveiled a prototype of his "humanoid" robot over the weekend, and it's - in my opinion, at any rate - equal parts fascinating and horrifying. 

Last year during Tesla's annual "AI Day" presentation, Musk teased this new robot by having someone come out in a suit resembling the machine and dancing/demonstrating. I've linked the relevant time stamp below.

You have to give them credit for a creative proof of concept...right? Compared to last year's presentation, this year definitely had more to show off.

Tesla showed off two iterations of its newest creation. The first - Bumble C - stumbled a bit awkwardly around the stage, but was its first test run without any tethering or additional support. Musk said that this version of the robot was a "rough development" version and that it will eventually mature into what they mean for Optimus to be. 

The video played during the presentation shows off a prototype lifting a box and trying to water a house plant. Musk's goal is to have these robots far more mobile and able to do things like mow the lawn or take out trash. I think this technology, given enough development, could have some pretty great far-reaching effects for people whose physical limitations make it difficult for them to accomplish tasks like this.

There are a lot of questions that come along with this new technology - and some of the most pressing ones haven't been answered. Specifically: when is this going to be available? Is the intent to develop this so that it is more widely affordable, and how likely is that to happen? Can this robot cook dinner for me when I feel lazy? ...okay, maybe that's just a burning question that I have.

I guess the joke of "preparing to bow to my new robot overlords" is becoming a bit more real than I'd like at times...but what do YOU think?
