Will this movie give D&D fans what we're looking for?

I'm a pretty big Dungeons & Dragons nerd.

If you know me, this hardly comes as a shock - but I basically grew up playing various TTRPGs. As someone who loves writing and acting, table-top roleplaying games scratch so many itches for me all at once. My first game was sometime around 1995 in my friend's basement (I got crushed by a rock, it was very anticlimactic), and I remember how excited I was when a D&D movie released in 2000 with the legendary Jeremy Irons in it.

Even Jeremy Irons couldn't save that movie. It was...not what I, or many other fans of D&D, wanted. Fast forward to 2022, and then Paramount Pictures drops this gem at San Diego Comic Con over the weekend:

This looks extremely promising to me. The cast, first of all, is delightful (though I've been burned by that before, soooo), but the clips the trailer highlighted look fun as all get out. Dragons? Beholders? Displacer Beats? OWLBEARS???

At any rate, this also reads much more like a D&D game to me. It's got quippy humor, seems light-hearted, and is basically about a group whose heist goes wrong and they set a world ending event in motion that they need to fix. The last 20 seconds of the trailer felt like it was plucked directly from the campaign I'm playing in now...but, I digress.

We'll have to wait a bit longer before the movie releases, but you'd better believe I'll be there opening weekend (and probably in costume) waiting with my friends to check it out and have a good time!

What about you - what do you think of the movie? Will you see it? Share with me!

Definitely seemed to capture the spirit of the game, there was several moments where I thought "That's what my group would do!". I'm not going to get excited, given how mixed game based movies always are, but I am watching its development with great interest now.

Haha, same! Particularly the bit at the end with the bard and the plans. We nearly had that exact conversation a few months ago with the bard in our Frostmaiden campaign. I always keep my expectations cautiously guarded, but I certainly hope for good things here!

I'm not familiar with D&D but I went there out of curiosity and I didn't regret it! I had a great time, adventure, humor, endearing actors...
