Things and stuff and things.

Maybe I've just been living under a rock, but I've never heard the term "demake" before today when I stumbled across an article talking about Portal being on the Nintendo 64. Yes, you read that right - it isn't made to look like the N64, but is actually for the N64.

A demake is a video game remake that's on an older platform or converts the game to an older graphical or gameplay style. Valve's Portal game was released on 2007 and is probably the last thing you'd expect to see on a Nintendo 64 system - and yet, here we are in the year 2022, where this is apparently a thing.

A programmer by the name of James Lambert has been working on this Portal demake for quite some time now, but his latest development video is one of his most exciting developments so far: he got the portal gun working.

The video above is a rough demonstration of the progress, and frankly it's amazing to think that the N64 is capable of this. The portals actually attach to the walls and you can walk right up to them and see everything reflected moving as it should. What the heck!?

In the video, Lambert says that he would normally have sound effects in the game at this stage, but he wanted to verify that the N64 could even handle doing portals before he went that far. In order to avoid stressing the system, there will probably be less views through these portals than you'd usually get in the actual game. This will keep things running smoothly - hopefully.

If you're into the idea of a Portal demake, you can follow Lambert's progress on github.

What do you think of demakes? Are you a Portal fan?
