Things and stuff and things.

I love how absolutely and utterly ridiculous cats are.

The old cat meme "if it fits, I sits," rings true almost 100% of the time. I know that my own cat will wiggle her way into positions that my body starts aching just at the mere thought of. All this is to say that I take great delight in seeing what kinds of shenanigans animals get up to when left to their own devices, which is the case here.

I found an article while browsing on Gizmodo about Starlink's Internet satellite dishes and how their self-heating feature was attracting cats. If we know anything about our feline friends, it's that they love to be warm, so I suppose this shouldn't come as a shock with how cold it's been outside (at least in our neck of the woods!) lately.

"Starlink works great until the cats find out that the dish gives off a little heat on cold days," Starlink user Aaron Taylor tweeted at the end of last year.

The above image of five cats huddled together on a ground-level satellite dish in the middle of a patch of snow went viral. The Tesla-and SpaceX-focused news outlet and store Tesmanian notes that the dish's Snow Melt Mode may be to blame. Launched in 2020, this feature lets dishes use self-heating capabilities to prevent any snow build-up from interfering with the internet signal...while apparently providing a toasty refuge for outdoor critters to commune around, too.

If you're concerned about these kitties out in the cold, don't worry too much: Taylor assured people on Twitter that the cats were well provided for.

"They have free access to heated house and come and go as they please. They are there by their own choice," he responded in another tweet. He went on to say that the cats will "voluntarily leave the heated cathouse" to catch some z's on the dish. It happens whenever the sun is out regardless of the temperature because the internal dish heater "warms from the bottom and the sun warms from the top."

Cats, man. Absolutely ridiculous - and we don't deserve them.

that's funny. Technology helps cats to warm Thank you, Elon
Yes, this is a great additional feature of satellite dishes - a cat warmer! Despite how funny this article looks, many cats wouldn’t mind some extra warmth when it’s really cold outside. Even my norwegian forest cat likes sleeping on a warm blanket. I’ve seen similar info about viking cats in this article, too, so it’s basically confirmed. So these cat warmers from Elon Musk do come in very handy. If I understood correctly, there are some problems with the Internet as Starlink works great only until cats notice that the plate radiates a lot of heat in cold weather, but it’s a small price to pay to keep the animals warm and happy.
