Release Info and Changelog
Published on November 4, 2015 By Tatiora In GalCiv III News

In response to your feedback on update 1.4 for Galactic Civilizations III,
the Dev Team has made it so that you may optionally re-enable the
old planetary production wheel through a pref.ini setting.

The reason the wheel is no longer part of the main game is two-fold. First, we don't want players to feel like they must micromanage every planet to this level in order to get an optimal result. Second, the result of such micro management was compelling in that it could, in the hands of skilled players, deliver 10X more production per planet than originally envisioned.

That said, we do understand that some players really enjoyed this and in single player, we encourage players to play the game however they want whether that be through mods or their own custom tweaking.

In addition, this 1.41 patch addresses issues with old game saves and fixes some other game play bugs. Below, you can read Brad Wardell's thoughts regarding the planetary wheel, find directions for enabling the patch, and a full list of changes.

Check out Brad Wardell's thoughts on the production wheel and where we are headed:

To enable the wheel:

  • Start the game once to get the new pref change
  • Quit the game
  • Go to My Games\GalCiv3
  • Open Prefs.ini
  • Change UseColonyProductionWheel from 0 to 1
  • Start GalCiv3

Changelog:

+ Players can enable the old style planetary production wheel from 1.3

+ Players with older save games can now use the new foci UI

+ Players will no longer be able to game the diplomatic trade screen to get millions of credits

+ Players will no longer start with the assault fighters starbase improvement.

+ Fixed a problem where the AI would sometimes display the incorrect conversation dialog.

+ The AI will no longer gift specialization techs to the player.

+ Addressed an issue that caused the game to sometimes crash when ships were destroyed

+ Added missing icons

As I posted on Twitter. I love you guys. I love you listen to your player base.

While I appreciate the fact you put it back in the game, I have found the game to be FAR better WITHOUT  the wheel.

Thanks for a great game.

No such thing as too many options.

on Nov 05, 2015

Thanks! I have never felt that using the wheel was much micromanaging at all, so having it back is great.

Excellent! Thanks guys! As one of those obsessive 'game the system' players trying to squeeze the most out of each planet(300hammers per turn min or get out!) you guys are the best!

Incoming: I crushed the ai on Godlike its too easy....

<Response from Larsenex> "Are you playing with the wheel?, Play without it like its supposed to and try again"

It would be nice if at some point it could be enabled through the interface menu rather than by altering game files.  Thanks for adding the option in any case.

I was initially shocked when I found the wheel gone. But I since realized it was just making me OCD and im actually enjoying the game more now.

Funny huh? Still, it is great that you give the option back. Thanks stardock you are my favourite game company.

Thanks guys, I think this is an excellent solution.

Even I have trouble beating the AI on Godlike without a good starting position. I would say it is just right. The new AI does not have like 20K ships and 200K debt, so it is more pleasant too.

The AI will no longer gift specialization techs to the player.

Absolutely right. I don`t mind not having the wheel, but if it`s optional I certainly won`t complain against that!

The AI will no longer gift specialization techs to the player.

Nooo! I liked it when the AI would trade its most important techs that meant I`d beat its ass! Seriously though I`m glad they`ve made the AI wiser, although wouldn`t the AI trade in very desperate circumstances? Like its the only way to get a Tech or agreement it really needed?

You can still trade for specialization techs, the AI will just will not gift you those techs anymore. Some people were complaining that they couldn't refuse the gift and thus were locked out of researching the specialization they wanted.

Ok, well spotted. I didn`t read that right.

I like the commitment to diversity of players. As long as people have the options they can play the way they wish. I just hope this doesn't splinter the community.

That ship sailed with the reward DLC.

Other than that, I agree, having the wheel makes the game more open-ended and keeps to the tradition of the previous GC games being able to control your economic focus.

Lets be clear. YOU NEVER HAD THE CONTROL in PREVIOUS Gal Civ games like you do with the wheel here..EVER!!

It was NEVER (the wheel) intended to be kept in game. It was always intended to be removed.

Again, all previous incarnations of Gal Civ NEVER EVER allowed you to have the planetary control you get when using the wheel in GCIII

On that note... if the community really wants it who am I to tell anyone how to play 'their' game...
